following on from his massive feel it in my bones release (which gained support from the likes of moodymann, the black madonna, gilles peterson, sassy j, seven davis jr) and a killer remix for afrobeat legend dele sosimi north london producer books returns to xvi records with two storming edits, kicking off their new high praise series in fine style. in the groove hits the ground running, immediately throwing the listener into the middle of peak-hour, loft party hysteria, its soulful vocals swirling overhead whilst the driving, unrelenting rhythms create a sweaty, electrically charged delirium. on the flip, ‘passage of time takes a slightly more introspective approach, its shuffled hats and hazy keys giving way to majestic, uplifting horns guiding the way down a psychedelic black hole, its laid back groove providing a perfect soundtrack to the voyage, as planets spin by in the darkness.

it is time for the nang and rayko worlds to collide once more. the awesome madrid-based dj and producer is back with his second album on nang. as ever the grooves are wide, the beats are large and the musical elements ooze funk and nu disco sheen. thing open up with the title track and recent single no stopping. the track features the fine vocals from tania haroshka and it is a powerhouse of synth disco, electronic groove with real bass guitar and darting guitars giving it just a tint of miami vice sheen. 2016 single crazy is up next with it s catchy hooks and counter melodies. it comes with just the right amount of good-time groove to bring a smile to any face. things tone down robot life which is a creeping synth fest with wandering grooves and chunky drums. danielle moore features with a fine vocal on a pure rayko style classic cosmic pirate. muscular basses and darting guitars being deployed to maximum effect. ocarina of time is next with its layered complexity and stabby synth bass notes. tania haroshika returns for the final trio of tunes on the album. her fine vocals melding effortlessly with the slick production from our hero. first up is hot which builds the music slowly adding layers of multi tracked guitars and real bass before breaking forth into song. u sneaks in from the leftfield with its quirky strings and arpegiated synth-clavi lines. the album closes with the (slightly) melancholic and pensive groover space boat. tania adding a brooding vocal over a pulsating juno style bassline. a fine effort from our madrid based hero who once again shows everyone what this top-of-his-game dj-producer can do with some guitars and keyboards.

tb is the alias of permanent vacation label co-head tom bioly. his releases as tb so far are invitation to love on john talabot s hiverned 10inch imprint (was voted amongst the best 10inch releases by uk fact magazine), and -city girl on permanent vacation, of which german groove magazine wrote entirely superb. heartbreak hotel is a double twelve-inch release with eight tracks of melancholic dance noir set in smoke-filled darkness. acid bobbles, distorted strings and echoed guitars are mangled and layered on machine beats and disco drums.

following on from his intimate entry into the dj-kicks mix series, lone is putting out a vinyl only ep of all the unreleased tracks from it. the horizontal mix tapped into all of lones influences, from hip-hop to house, idm to techno. it also showcased some producers signed to his own magic wire label, and of course the back bone was built from some of the nottingham mans freshest new productions. they come after celebrated releases on werk discs, r&s and dekmantel, and include dance floor aligned eps and more rounded full lengths designed for close listening. here he sits in between the two across three thrilling cuts. opener ‘saturday night is a breezy bit of deep house with crisp boom-baps and swirling pads that lend it a dreamy, ethereal feel. spoken word snippets are stitched into the groove and the whole thing is as frictionless and feel good as house comes. next up, ‘arc is a little more direct, with scattered snares flapping over dry wooden kicks. its a punchy bit of house latest dj-kicks mix star kerri chandler would be proud, and comes overlaid with spring time flutes and luscious pads as a classically inclined bassline powers things along. last but not least is ‘alpha wheel 4 (ambient mix), a kaleidoscopic passage of suspensory sound scuffed up glassy surfaces trapping you in rays of refracted light from start to finish. all three tracks exhibit lones authentic, lived in and lo-fi aesthetic, and as a result slip perfectly into his ever more essential discography.

natasha kitty katt returns with a new, two-tracker 12inch for masterworks music. the multi-talented mistress of disco has been wreaking havoc on dance floors all over the place with her infectious sets at liverpool disco festival, the southport weekender and this year s suncebeat in tisno, croatia. not to mention having recently solidified her own imprint, ghetto disco records, she s also been flexing her talents in the studio with recent releases on hot digits, tribe uk and now, masterworks music. the disco vibrations ep comes with two sides of pure dancefloor heat with 24 hour sesh up to bat first. co-produced by krane, this high tempo burner features a relentless, pumping bass groove and loads of those quintessential disco-strings. jubilant vocal chops chant, screech and howl for the party to continue all night and day while filtered piano riffs keep the disco fires burning bright. flipping over we get after the dance, which offers a similar approach to it s a-side counterpart. taking on a deeper, sub bassline, things get even groovier once layers of sampled vibes and cosmic synths chirp and swoop all throughout the tracks six minute run time.

following a live debut at berghain and standout shows at de school and institut fuer zukunft, daniel martin-mccormick returns as relaxer with the fourth installment in the projects eponymous ep series. jamie lee takes over the a-side harrowing screams are framed by strobing chords and a deadly groove. simultaneously euphoric, agonizing and cathartic, jamie lee was written as the climax of relaxers live set and is a prime example of the artists uniquely feral techno. drawing equally on punk confrontations and more haunting emotional explorations, jamie lee is a lacerating and visceral descent. on the b-side, unwind oozes from the speakers, a miasmic cut that builds on the white knuckle tension of jamie lee. a lone synth figure worms its way through pulsating 3d drones, shimmering dissonances and hiccuping drums, rocking out into a quasi catatonic infinity. finally regime change gently floats on the surface of a trash-filled sea, a fading, smog choked reverie.

after releasing their first two releases on one disc, the third release on amsterdam imprint working titles is a release on its own. label founders scott franka & kaap are behind the label s third release that features two epic tracks from the dutch pair and again finds them exploring new and exciting techno territory with their lively machine jams.
first track poise i is a deep and dubbed out techno track with deft synths slowly shapeshifting and bringing sombreness to the quickened groove. it’s late night music to zone you out with sparse but rich detailing to keep your mind occupied and it gets ever-busier over the course of thirteen enthralling minutes. then poise ii is a 16 minute masterpiece that is watery and dubby. it has undulating synth currents and increasingly textured snares. building to a peak then pulling back, with occasional freaky vocal sounds and sci-fi motifs, it is a truly cinematic piece that closes out an ambitious ep.

seattle artist, and from 0-1 co-owner sone, issues his debut vinyl ep, auroras. aptly titled, this ep embodies the characteristic ethereal nature of these light formations seen in the far northern and southern hemispheres. deep heady atmospheres, and constant driving rhythmic motion perfectly embody the artists vision. australis opens the ep with hypnotic rhythms and enigmatic textures. milkplant continues the theme while ratcheting up the energy level, and injecting a touch of grit. borealis brings the funk with undeniable groove and tracky percussive power serving as a great dj tool. uk artist operator (aka rich jones) turns the focus with heavy driving force, and an organic, acidic chug.

some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

the delsin re-issue arm turns its attention to lost trax. this ep features four cuts taken from two different eps, the saturnian system and lost trax 2 from 2006 and 2010 respectively. saturnian system opens the ep with some acid laced electro slickness. fluttering snares and spacey synths carry it away into the cosmos, then the sequel gets much busier. scurrying lines dart about in manic but funky fashion, with serene pads off setting the high energy drums. self destruct sequence then drops into an urgent, slippery electronic groove riddled with squelchy sounds and rubbery bass all perfectly orchestrated. last of all, birth is a nimble electronic house cut with plaintive synths and kinetic drums that wiggle and wriggling through the night sky. this is an ep stuffed with timeless sounds and is another essential reissue from delsin.

hot on the heels of the smash release from superlover, mother recordings welcome back simion to the label with his the rhythm ep. simion presents two cuts of upfront house music that are prime for the dancefloor. first up is title-track, the rhythm , a nod to the 90s chicago sound with jacking drums and a sensual female vocal. backed up by a funk-fuelled bassline and a lush piano breakdown that lead into a deep house groove. the b-side feeling good is true to its title. tight percussion, chopped vocals and a catchy synth line all come together in a fluttering climax. this one is sure to leave any dancefloor shaking.

ltd repress !! in dust we trust are back with their second 12- of 2017. this time the two entities, chaos in the cbd and jon sable, offer one side each. on side a, false awakening by chaos in the cbd attacks your brain with open, spacious pads and synthesised melodies that float on top of a dark and hypnotic percussive groove ù the kind that might make you miss your stop because you ve found yourself staring into space. on the flip side you have scumbag unity by jon sable, a loose dreamy track with dubbed-out pads and vocals that glide between a drum machine groove. this marks the second collaboration between jon sable and kroba of archie pelago, who plays the woozy basement-style saxophone that keeps your consciousness hooked. serious tip for those drawn to the deeper side of dance floor-ready records.

londons chocky joins the dessous recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on steve bugs imprint. self knowledge is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins plenty of space to expand into its full potential the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds. next up is ‘a reefa - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam. casa de estrela changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track even though it would work at prime time, chockys feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

clergy returns for its 9th instalment with a club ready ep of serious weapons from label mainstay, and one half of works unit, reflec. the four track release opens with acid response , in which reflec has combined a tough rhythm section with a growling 303 to create a high energy roller guaranteed to keep the dance floor moving. continuing on this trend of heavy hitting rollers, osmosis is a drum track through and through, which incorporates dark and sweeping atmospherics into the groove true to reflec’s form.
the b side sees host to canyon, a peak time clergy anthem with heavy, driving drums complimented with a spacey and emotional pad on the breakdown. clergy 009 is rounded off by a broken edit of canyon which exchanges the driving kicks for a fragmented rhythmic style, a nod to the uk roots of reflec’s musical style.

(detector for advanced neutron capture experiments), the various artists series of the label, comes back with the italians ness, luigi tozzi and the french underjack. on the a-side with -tmb- ness turns a robotic rhythm in a dark electric / industrial infected tunnel. luigitozzi’s a2 “blood meridian” strikes soft under an oppressive butterfly effect creating an intense flow. underjack on the b-side delivers a nebulous groove that is responsible of a eight minutes of immense hypnotic techno cut with energy drums and crispy bassline.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

girlfriends and other machines is another distinctive work by mostly undiscovered berlin based artist rhytch displaying his unique dirty and soulful sound. the 6 track ep varies from edgy deep house to weirdo krautrock reminding one of the genreroots, while sounding like a legit fresh reinterpretation. the artists voice being revealed on most of the tracks is giving the listener a glimpse of who he is and adds some character traits to infamous rhytch. the ep gets completed by an outstanding marbod remix, which is going to make people snap with its flickering distorted 909 hats woven into one of his typical psychedelic housepads creating an irresistible groove and atmosphere. the ep being released on berlin underground imprint lofile records is a nice prospect of what is to expect of further releases and obviously a wise choice for label and artist which share the same hobbies - drinking and smoking.

the a-side opens with the powerful beat of clark nova, a cut that moves forward with a modulating synth line and simple but cleverly designed percussions. this is followed by unknown soldier, an intense techno weapon that reflects the distinctive sound of mekas.
the b-side features both versions of atmen, starting off with par grindivik’s dance-floor rework of the title track that combines a fresh arpeggiated motif and a powerful groove with the emotional spirit of the original. atmen closes the record, an epic ambient techno track built with deep atmospheric synth lines on an intelligent stripped down breakbeat.

for anma’s fifth release, reekee aka italy’s riccardo masi has produced a classic cut of uplifting house, quintessentially jamming a thunderous rolling groove with soft jazz piano. ecstatic synths unleash their primal screams throughout before the hammond steps up and raises the bar! remixer ricardo miranda cooks up a veritably frantic electronic jungle of idiosyncratic pulsing square waves and marimba voodoo soup, before vick lavender takes over the b-side with nigh on ten minutes of organically blissful jazz and groove experimentation. vick’s mix comes rooted with percussive breaks and a solid evolving rhythm section and is brim-filled with sleazy vibes, tender electric licks and rapturous synth pads swelling us into elation! lovingly pressed on 180g vinyl, hand stamped and labelled.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.
